About Elan Vitale
Our History
The house at 172 West Main Street has a great deal of history since it was built in 1914 by well-known local businessman Samuel L. Lambert. Lambert originally built this home as well as the famed Reeta Hotel and Lambert Theatre in Welland. The house was then sold to the Welland County General Hospital in 1919. In 1932, the home was converted to Sunniholme Rooms, "the home away from home", which operated as a rooming house. The house was later turned over to the Nero family in Welland.
Since 1988, 172 West Main Street turned its focus to salon and spa services when prominent local hairstylist Barry Maurice and his wife Cheryl purchased the house. Barry was well-known for his creativity and flare, especially when it came to those who enjoyed punk rock.
Barry owned the salon until the year 2000 when his daughter Lisa Maurice took over and opened Elan Vitale. Through her years of ownership Lisa and her husband went to great lengths to restore the house to it original glamour through countless restoration projects from ceilings and floors, to baseboards and decor.
Elan Vitale grew its customer base by reputation of quality and superior service, a reputation it still holds within the community today. Under the ownership of Maurice, Elan Vitale won a number of Reader's Choice awards for Best Day Spa (2003 - 2005) as well as a number of podium finishes for Horticultural gardens between 2001 and 2005.
In 2007, current owners Lisa Sheptenko and Jeremy Rocca met with Maurice to discuss purchasing the business. In August, the pair of young entrepreneurs took the leap of faith and took over the operations of Elan Vitale.
Since then, a lot of hard work has been put into the building to maintain its original charm while modernizing the decor to fit the market in which they operate. The effort did not go unrecognized, as the 2007- 2010 Reader's Choice Awards recognized Elan Vitale as:
